Looking for Migrants = Report Paul Marsh

Description of sighting

Very windy day,most small birds were either invisible or brief glimpses only.Single whitethroat was the only obvious downed migrant.Very good view of hunting female sparrowhawk on the steep road from the farm track.Good views also of group of ravens and shellduck numbers are increasing on the Mud flats.Good photo oportunity at the top of the steps with two adult male goats "jousting",the sound reminiscent of BBC Natural history programmes.Swallow passage continued over.

A Very Windy Day = Report Paul Marsh

Description of sighting

Hopes of a fall of migrants after the wind and rain yesterday did not materialise.The weather cleared and very good views of the Welsh coast were on offer but the wind kept most small birds in cover.At one stage gulls seemed to be flying backwards against the wind and the only birds active were a single kestrel,two peregrine and a buzzard which provided good views.Some small bird songs were evident and a raven could be heard in the distance.The tide was low and large numbers of shellduck were visible on the mudflats.Later in the morning there were quite a number of low flying swallows near

Sunny and warm day.Whitethroats were singing and very visible.Stone chats quite visible,both male and female.Splendid sighting of Male Linnet.Male Chaffinch showing well in bright sunshine.
Usual numbers of gull species.Overall,high species count.

Description of sighting

Beatiful day on Brean Down, Bluebells in flower and the Somerset Rock Rose blooming near the Steps.
Whitethroats seemed to be singing from many bushes and birds were visible and some seen carrying food.Good views of the first cuckoo of 2009.

First visit of 2009

Description of sighting

Cold damp day,reflected in species seen.On flooded fields near Farm I saw Swans,Shelduck and a solitary
Little Egret.On my way back to the car,20+ Curlew flew in,reflecting high tide conditions.Very large numbers Blackheaded Gulls and a few Herring and Lesser Black Backed Gulls about.There were also a pair of mallard swimming in the Dew Pond,near the site of Cox's Old House

Morning Walk in the Sunshine

Description of sighting

After a very wet evening,the Down had dried out quite well and there were few people initially.On arrival there were two sparrowhawks flying over,closley followed by a heron and a large flight of goldfinches.On the top of the Down,there were large numbers of adult and juvenile stonechats,and a few quite visible wheaters.A young couple and their ferret came by,the ferret apparantly not having spotted the rabbits near the road.In the bushes tere were large numbers of longtailed tits ,a  few blue and great tits together with a very vocal robin.Low Tide and the exposed mud showed up the large

Scheduled National Trust Visit

Description of sighting

A very windy afternoon with some clouds and outbreaks of sunshine.Large group of house martins and young swallows went over feeding near the Fort.Kestrel reported by visitor but not seen.Usual groups of carrion crow and herring gull evident but highlight was two raven low over calling loudly.Later in afternoon a group of shellduck came over landing on the exposed mudflats.

fine sunny day,few visitors,stonechat,goldfinch and linnet young birds very evident.buzzard was being chased by crows.peregrine was activley bombing something at foot of the cliff,probably a goat which suddenly appeared in the appropriate spot
