Bluebells,Birdsong and Butterflies

Description of sighting

A fine bright if windy morning.The Down was covered in Bluebells and the Somerset Rock Roses
were out on the Southern slopes.It seemed that most bushes had either a whitethroat singing on top or inside as I walked along the road.A pheasant was calling but not visible.Male Orange Tip,Green-veined white and small Tortoiseshell were quite visible.

Morning Visit - Paul Marsh

Description of sighting

large number of bird species seen,migrants few and far between due to weather conditions.The young kestrels were quite visible and active and shellduck numbers are begining to build in the River Axe.The cattle and goats were very easily found and provided some good views.Visitor reported some rutting activity with the goats. Singles of wheatear,whinchat,whitethroat and wood warbler were probably the highlights.

Search for outgoing migrants stopping off on Brean Down

Description of sighting

three wheatear at the top of the steps.Kestrel very active and at least 4 birds seen but no sighting of peregrines.Raven good display near Military Road.Swallows feeding among the White Park cattle near the fort and at the weston end of Brean,200 plus house martins and a few swallows near Brean Farm.
One single swift seen.

Spring Visit

Description of sighting

The weather was cloudy to start and very humid,with skies clearing later.The most visble and vocal
birds were whitethroats and linnet.The whitethroats were very obliging and perched singing on the top of the bushes.Several family groups of stonechat,meadow pipit and goldfinches were also seen.Most of the usual Brean Down residents were about although there was no sign of the peregrines or kestrels usually seen.
Pairs of shellduck were around the beach on the Weston side.

Sunshine and Bird Song

Description of sighting

Beautiful day,sunny and some wind with clear views accross the channel to Wales.Chaffinch,Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff song was everywhere.Goldfinches and Greenfinches were also doing their best to compete with the occasional robin in the bushes along the military road.Willow Warblers were quite visible as were Male Chaffinches looking resplendant in the sunshine.Swallow numbers are increasing,I saw about 30 while on site.

Search for returning Migrants stopping off on Brean Down

Description of sighting

A morning visit to Brean Down which started in reasonably good weather to look for returning
migrants ending in in heavy rain.A pair of displaying raven were the high spot and on the return walk along the Military road there was a "possible only" sighting of a Wheatear!

First Report of 2010

Description of sighting

Bad weather and other committments delayed the first visit to Brean Down.The weather was clear and cold with very good views across to the Welsh coast and beyond.Conditions affected what was visible,with only one meadow pipit and no other small birds seen in 2 hours.The usual crows,magpies and blackbirds were present.A single hen pheasant in the gorse was quite a surprise.In the estuary,shellduck and mallard were feeding on the mudflats along with a group of about distant 20 waders,probably Redshank .3 Ravens were very visble and vocal.The feral goats and local rabbits were easy to find.
