A Very Windy Day = Report Paul Marsh

Description of sighting

Hopes of a fall of migrants after the wind and rain yesterday did not materialise. The weather cleared and very good views of the Welsh coast were on offer but the wind kept most small birds in cover. At one stage gulls seemed to be flying backwards against the wind and the only birds active were a single kestrel, two peregrine and a buzzard which provided good views. Some small bird songs were evident and a raven could be heard in the distance. The tide was low and large numbers of shellduck were visible on the mudflats.Later in the morning there were quite a number of low flying swallows near

Description of sighting

First visit for about 4 weeks, day started warm and sunny but clouded over by mid day.The Down is very green at the moment and the birds were taking advantage of the cover in the trees and bushes.Reasonable numbers of species seen, mostly low or single numbers.Largest group was adult and young linnets.Swallows hunting over the short grass.Peregrine seen briefly as I arrived, but could be heard later on.A good view of a Peregrine harrasing a flock of Oystercatchers at high tide in the riverat the eastern end of Brean Down.No catches made.

Visit

Description of sighting

Very sunny and clear weather with exceptionally strong winds for the whole of the 3 hour visit.Weather conditions meant that only large birds had any real chance of coping. Some swallows were making a valiant attempt to collect food for their youngsters.A treat later in the visit was very good views of the peregines low over Brean Fort and also going for Lesser Black Backed Gulls and Carrion Crows but only in a half hearted way, serious targets on Brean are usually the resident pigeons.
