Found the 4 Twite that had been reported on S.O.S and Bird Guides also a splendid Male Snow Bunting on the Shingle Bank near the Sea Wall at Brean Down Farm.Lots of duck and waders (Redshank and Dunlin) in the Estuary.Good views of Redwing and Fieldfare in the bushes approaching Brean Down Farm.Good views also of the resident Peregrine low over Brean Cove and a hunting Sparrowhawk on the Estuary.
We were unable to find the Ring Ouzel reported on the previous day but that was more than made up for by a very obliging Yellow Browed Warbler in with a mixed flock of small birds including Goldcrest in the bushes near Brean Down Farm. The first Redwing were a bonus as was good sightings of Buzzard,Kestre,Peregrine and Sparrowhawk.Large numbers of Shelduck (650+) were also seen.
Beautiful morning, flat calm sea with lots of gull activity. The usual birds were around although no real sign of any migration yet.Three mallard swiming off the fort and 2 buzzards picking up the warm air spirals. There were lots of Chiff chaff singing and visible together with a few Blackcap both male and female.Brief view of juvenile Peregrine.
First visit of 2014 in the hope of finding migrants, specifically overflying Sand Martins and an early Wheatear or two.No luck but I did find a cracking Male Black Redstart in the quarry near the Fort, the bird gave some good views in the sunshine.Several pairs of Stonechat were easily seen.A surprise for Brean was a Buzzard working the hillside. Two adult Peregrines were a good sight.I did hear a Pheasant and a Skylark but could not find them.
bright sunny day, large flocks of goldfinch feeding on seedheads.Several pairs of stonechat.single dunnock.
Raven Kestrel and Peregrine enjoying the wind
strong winds keeping bird numbers low other than on beach
Exceptionaly windy day determined small number of species seen. Two ravens enjoying the wind,
a single juvenile peregrine was making hard going of the stormy weather
August is normally quiet on the Down.A single Kestrel and an adult and juvenile Peregrine were the Raptors of the day.The other good birds were 4 youg Willow Warblers and an Adult.
